Bees Don’t Know What Hexagons Are. March 2026
When bees create the hexagonal cells in their honeycomb they aren’t aware that they are creating hexagons. The cells in the honeycomb are originally created circular, but the interaction of neighbouring cells makes the walls of the cells move until they fill the gaps between the circular cells and they naturally form hexagons (because each cell is touching six neighbouring cells).
The hexagons are not an architectural design feature consciously thought up by the bees, but are a self-emerging feature of the construction method.
